Risk management is about conscious decision making. In business and in daily life we are taking risk decisions every day. Some have a small, others have a huge impact on our lives. Applying risk management techniques ensures that decisions are sustainable and in line with personal goals or strategies of companies.

With the risk manager mindset, we often focus on the possible negative consequences but there is another, equally important, side to it: opportunities. Only considering both risks and opportunities when advising or challenging business management will deliver the desired impact.

Risk management is an excellent place to learn about the business’ value chain, its operational challenges and strategic priorities. I recommend talents to spend a couple of years in a risk function to broaden their horizons and to develop a strategic mindset, while developing their leadership skills.

Exercising the open mindset. Networking with other risk individuals provides impulses and triggers a curious mindset. Together with my team we actively participate in the risk dialogue and contribute expertise and impulses to the community.
