To me, Risk Management is part of the so-called negative capability, to use the concept first mentioned by the English poet John Keats in 1817.
“Negative Capability, that is when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact & reason.”
It is important to be capable of living in uncertainty, and risk management helps. Manage your risks, hedge your bets, and enjoy the uncertainty that is a part of life.

History is not the best teacher because it encourages assumptions. A great deal of Risk Management is based on assumptions and seeming parameters. Things are not always what they seem, and the most complex computation is of little use if it is based on wrong assumptions. Question your assumptions non-stop!

❓ 𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 – 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧?
Changing careers midlife is a very risky endeavour. Society does not favour such changes. I had been a private banker for Russian clients for 15+ years. Being a Russia specialist, I saw the writing on the wall in 2014, I knew this was just the beginning of something bad. I went to business school, studied business coaching and adult teaching, and became a business coach in 2015. Now, in view of what Russia is up to, I am glad I did.

Diversify! Even your skills. Go out and obtain a skill or a certificate that may seem of little use at the moment. Trust me, a time will come when you’ll be glad you did it.

❓𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞?
SRA is a high quality information platform based on non-commercial exchange. This is what I value highly: learning in the spirit of cooperation. That’s why I have been a member since the beginning of SRA. Also, I want to stay up-to-date on what is going on in banking because, you never know, I may work in banking again some day. Life has taught me to diversify my options. This is risk management.
