Summary
Archegos Capital Management was one of the biggest trading disasters of all time, leading to $10 billion of losses across Wall Street. The incident reveals industry-wide shortcomings in risk management and a crucial gap in the regulatory oversight of large international banks.
The enormous positions were difficult to detect for executive boards, auditors and regulators because the magnitude of total return swap counterparty exposures is not visible from traditional risk measures. It seems that stress tests were ineffective in some cases. The common practice of booking client trades across different legal entities creates blurred responsibilities amongst supervisory authorities in different locations. Our keynote speakers will focus on the lessons learned from the gigantic losses.
