Summary
The combination of the global financial crisis in 2008, global money laundering scandals, cross-border and tax issues, as well as misselling risky products to clients, highlighted important issues on governance, policies, procedures, culture, and appropriate risk management. The responses of regulators and politicians have radically evolved with the goal of tightening up the regulatory framework and supervisions. Because of the pressure, the financial institutions have significantly increased their forces in the Compliance and Risk department to manage related risks but adhere to the pressure of the regulators.
The Swiss Risk Association (SRA) has the pleasure to have David Leppan, founder of World-Check, as a guest speaker. David will speak about the evolution of compliance covering financial crime within financial institutions over the past years, the impact, the lack of efficiency and the marginal impact on the current growth of the financial crime. He will also raise questions about emerging risks such as data protection laws and related violations, etc.
“Compliance has grown into a monster, flagging every potential risk and swamping banks with false positives, while those truly involved in criminal networks are largely unaffected.”
