Summary

The war in Ukraine has a significant impact on the stability of the global economy. Major disruptions of the value supply chain and the logistics have led to shortage of commodities impacting the commodities markets. The different actors in this business activities had to strengthen their processes to manage the underlying risks.  

In this event we will discuss the views of professionals in the commodity trading industry on the management of risks within the current situation. In particular, we shall discuss the following topics: 

  • The Credit and performance risks facing the commodity trading companies. How to manage or reduce such risks in such volatile and uncertain markets  
  • Managing increased political/sovereign risks; How to navigate and manage risks in such complex and rapid changes of geopolitical environment   
  • Managing international sanctions changes, How to ensure adherence to complex sanctions regimes involving numerous stakeholders around the world.   

Presenters

Nicolas Dussausois: EMEA Credit Director, CHS Inc. Nicolas has gained an extensive experience, having worked over the last 15+ years for Cargill, Alvean, COFCO and now CHS on Grains, Vegetable Oils, Sugar commodities as well as Freight and Fertilizers, and financial modelling. CHS is a global agribusiness owned by farmers, ranchers and cooperatives across the United States. Net Income of $1.7bn and revenues of  $47,8bn as of Aug 22.  

Damian Cavanagh: EMEA Head of Credit Risk, Louis Dreyfus. Damian has 20 years of international experience gained across different industries and functions, primarily in agricultural commodities trading industry. The has worked for Nidera, Noble and Cofco before joining Louis Dreyfus. Louis Dreyfus is a global agricultural merchant and processor. Turnover $49.6bn in Dec 21 

Philip Goodswen: Partner at Ekur Advisors. Philip is a UK certified lawyer with over 20 years’ experience advising on issues in international trade, financial services, corporate governance and human rights. He has worked for ExxonMobil, Barclays Capital, Morgan Stanley and Cargill. Ekur Advistos is a boutique consulting firm focused on guiding clients through the complex landscape of risk and regulation. 

Moderated by Patricia Ulrich Garcia Cid: Group Head of Credit Risk, Ecom Group. Patricia has 15+ years of experience in commodity counterpart risk management on soft commodities (coffee, cocoa, coffee, grains and sugar) as well as freight. She worked for the Banque Cantonale de Genève, Cargill and is now with Ecom Group. Ecom is a global commodity trading and processing group specializing in coffee, cotton and cocoa in major producing and consuming countries, with other ancillary agricultural operations and products
