Financial Demography – Why does it matter? What is the value proposition for investment management?

Summary

Demographic change is a megatrend that will shape societies and economies in the years and decades to come. Without a doubt, these structural changes will also affect financial markets. But when? How? And who will be the winners and losers? Demographic risks (and opportunities) on financial markets are notoriously neglected, badly understood and/or underestimated. Under the name “Financial Demography” the WDA Forum, in cooperation with Demografik and the University of Basel, investigate this topic, disseminate knowledge, and develop solutions for the financial industry. As part of this project, the team is currently developing a Demographic Risk Indicator, winning the Swiss Risk Award 2023. • Manuel Buchmann, Project Manager at Demografik and Research Director at WDA Forum
  Dr. Manuel Buchmann is Research Director of the WDA Forum and Project Manager at Demografik. He is the principal investigator and coordinator of the project “Financial Demography”. Previously, he completed his PhD in Applied Economics at University of Basel on the topic “The Effect of Demographic Change on Swiss Labor Markets”.
• Hans Groth, Chairman of the Board at World Demographic & Ageing Forum
  Dr. med. Hans Groth, MBA is the Chairman of the World Demographic & Ageing Forum (WDA Forum). From 2009 – 2020 he has been a guest lecturer at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) with the topic “Megatrend: Global Demographic Change.” From 2009 – 2015 he was Member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum (WEF). Currently he is visiting Professor at the Makerere University in Kampala/Uganda and the Andrassy University in Budapest/Hungary.
• Heinz Zimmermann, Steering Committee and Lead Finance of Financial Demography
  Professor emeritus of Finance at the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Academic director of the Basel-Tilburg MBA (Finance) program. Author of numerous papers in the field of capital market research including empirical asset pricing, derivatives, corporate finance, pension finance. Honorary member of the Swiss Society for Financial Market Research (SGF).
